Theodolites

Theodolites are instruments for measuring the horizontal direction (angle, right left) and vertical angles (angles, top bottom). Two types of theodolites are available: mechanical (reading angle from scale) and electronic (digital display of angle on display). Due to technical developments, mechanical theodolites are almost nonexistent on the market. GLM Lasermeßtechnik offers only electrical theodolites.

Instrument handling

Theodolite represent the most advanced products of the precision mechanical and optical industry. This means instruments of this type must be handled especially carefully.

  • Always hold or grasp the instrument by its case or the telescope support when unpacking or storing the instrument.
  • The plastic box or metal container must be easy to close without anything getting stuck.
  • Always transport in the corresponding container.
  • Carry upright if the theodolite must be transported while attached to the tripod.

Future of theodolites

Due to the development of the total station (theodolite + slope distance measurement = 3D coordinates) theodolites are becoming less popular. Because of the huge technological advantage, most users move away from theodolites towards the total station (3D Measuring System).
