Naval shipbuilding

In the construction of commercial ships, it is assumed that damages to the ship will always be avoided. Those damages that cannot be completely avoided are called “foreseeable damages”, such as grounding, collisions and fire. These damages are covered by double bottom, collision bulkhead and fire insulation.

Naval vessels, on the other hand, must be better adapted to damage through enemy weapons in a warlike situation. This requires higher requirements in steel constructions, which must be continuously checked with a 3D measuring system.

A 3D measuring system from GLM provided the perfect solution for a variety of surveying tasks. In submarine construction, for example, it is used for:

• Roundness of the pressure vessel
• Torpedo alignment and definition of the line of fire
• Assembly of components/sensors in relation to the weapon line
• Assembly of sections in relation to the centre of the ship
• Scanning the hull
• Automatic staking of set positions on curved surfaces
